Prithvi Shaw Reflects on Career Downturn, Cites Poor Choices and Lost Focus
NEW DELHI: Once heralded as the future of Indian cricket, Prithvi Shaw has openly addressed the challenges that have hampered his once-promising career. In a recent interview, the 25-year-old candidly discussed how questionable decisions, distractions, and shifting priorities contributed to his decline, both professionally and personally.
"It's multifaceted. From an outsider's perspective, it's easy to judge. But I know the reality. I acknowledge making several flawed decisions. I began dedicating less time to cricket, despite my previous rigorous practice regimen. I used to spend countless hours batting in the nets, never tiring. I'd practically live at the ground. I admit, distractions crept in," Shaw confessed to News24.
He elaborated, "Subsequently, I prioritized the non-essential. I associated with the wrong crowd, drawn in by my then-success. They led me astray, and I deviated from my path. I went from eight hours of daily practice to just four."
Shaw's career trajectory saw a meteoric rise after his sensational Test debut in 2018, where he scored a century against the West Indies. He was instantly catapulted to stardom, even sparking comparisons to legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag. However, a series of disciplinary issues and fitness concerns led to his eventual ouster from the national team. From being dropped by Mumbai due to fitness issues to going unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, the decline was both rapid and highly visible.
Now, the right-handed opener is determined to make a comeback. Shaw has officially severed ties with the Mumbai Cricket Association, opting for a fresh start with Maharashtra as a professional player. In his letter to the MCA, Shaw expressed gratitude for their support while emphasizing that this move is crucial for his growth. While sporadic comebacks, including a stint in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, have occurred, consistent performances have remained elusive.
Armed with a new state team, a rejuvenated mindset, and a candid acknowledgment of his past errors, Prithvi Shaw is focused on turning over a new leaf. Whether this marks the beginning of a successful comeback story or a gradual exit from elite cricket remains to be seen. For now, he is committed to taking the challenging route back to the top.
