Periyar library in Coimbatore to be ready by January 2026

The Tamil Nadu government plans to inaugurate in January 2026 the Periyar Library and Science Centre that is under construction in Coimbatore city.

Minister for Public Works Department E.V. Velu, who inspected the construction works of the library and the Semmozhi Poonga in Coimbatore on Thursday, told the media the library was coming up at ₹300 crores and will have space to accommodate four lakh books. The building will be constructed at ₹245 crores and the books for it will be worth ₹45 crores. Another ₹5 crore will be spent on development of digital infrastructure.

The building will have ground plus seven floors, four lifts, and escalator to the first floor, he said.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin laid foundation for the library in November 2024.
