Yadgir person arrested in Udupi’s ‘digital arrest’ case

The Udupi’s Cyber Economic and Narcotic Crime police have arrested Kiran, 24, a resident of Shahpur in Yadgir district, in connection with the case where Udupi resident was ‘digitally arrested’ and forced to transfer ₹89 lakh.

In a statement, the CEN police said Kiran was arrested in Dharwad. The police recovered ₹5 lakh and a mobile phone. The police also recovered ₹2 lakh, which is part of the amount taken from Udupi resident Kinnar Santosh Kumar. Kiran had transferred ₹2 lakh to one C.K. Mohammed Nisham, the police said.

Kumar alleged that a person, claiming to be an officer from Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, called him on September 11, 2024, and said 17 FIRS were registered for illegal advertisement and harassment text messages. Then he received a video call in which the caller claimed as inspector from Andheri East and said his account is being used for money laundering. The caller forced Kumar to transfer ₹89 lakh and told the latter that he will be ‘digitally’ arrested till amount gets credited.
