Various nature education activities and competitions marked the observance of the World Wetlands Day in Coimbatore.
Kovai Kulangal Padhukaapu Amaippu (KKPA) organised two-day events at the Vellalore tank on the theme ‘protecting wetlands for our common future’. Children were taken out for a nature walk through the tank bund and the Miyawaki forest on Saturday, during which they could observe birds, butterflies, plants and other living organisms associated with the wetland. Drawing and nature journaling competitions were held for them after the nature walk.
District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati attended the programmes on Sunday and inaugurated an exhibition of photographs, which documented the wetland ecosystem over the years, and drawings of children.
Prizes were given to winners of competitions at the event, which was organised by KKPA in collaboration with the WWF-India, Care Earth Trust, Osai, Coimbatore Nature Society, The Nature and Butterfly Society. R. Manikandan, coordinator of KKPA and S. Arunvenkatesh, water stewardship coordinator of WWF-India, were present.
IFGTB organises awareness campaign
The Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB), Coimbatore, observed World Wetlands Day with an awareness campaign and an in-house quiz competition on January 31.
C. Kunhikannan, Director, ICFRE-IFGTB, inaugurated the campaign and released an awareness poster emphasising the significance of wetlands. Rekha R. Warrier, Scientist G and EIACP Coordinator; B. Nagarajan, Group Coordinator – Research; and S. Vigneswaran, Senior Programme Officer, spoke at the event, which was organised to raise awareness about the vital role of wetlands among students and the general public.
