Women stage protest in support of accused in cheating case in Salem

More than 100 women staged a protest in support of four individuals arrested for allegedly defrauding the public of several crores through a trust.

City police had, last month, arrested four people at Ammapet, who ran a trust and allegedly collected over ₹200 crore in deposits from the public after they were promised high returns. The protesting women gathered at Fort in support of the accused and demanded their release, claiming that they had paid the interest amount on time.

Deputy Commissioner Velmurugan arrived at the spot and explained that offering such high rates was unsustainable, and urged the women to file complaints if they wanted their money back. The women, however, refused to call off the protest despite police warnings. After they took three agents of the trust in a police van, the protest was called off.
