In December 2024, Hyderabad witnessed something extraordinary on its bustling streets. For the first time, the city’s traffic management team welcomed members of the transgender community as Traffic Assistants—a move that’s as inspiring as it is historic.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, in partnership with the state police, spearheaded this initiative to give a big shoutout to inclusivity and celebrate the power of fresh starts.

So, how did it all come together? The recruitment was open to individuals aged 18 to 40, with a minimum qualification of SSC (10th grade). Out of 44 selected candidates, 39 made it to the final roster, completing a two-week crash course at the Traffic Training Institute in Goshamahal. From learning the art of managing chaotic Hyderabad traffic to understanding the nitty-gritty of traffic laws, they were prepped and primed to hit the streets.

For most of these recruits, this job is more than just a career shift—it’s a life-altering milestone.
