The newly-constructed Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Valampurivilai dump yard under Nagercoil Municipal Corporation has reached its final phase and is expected to be commissioned soon.
Developed at a cost of around ₹129 crore, the STP has an underground drainage network spanning 1,15,923 metres with 4,667 manholes and a pumping station at Vadiveeswaram. The project serves 52 wards in the corporation. According to officials, Phase I of the project covered 35 wards of which 18 were fully completed and 17 partially completed. The scheme was designed based on the population data with the base year 2015, with a population of 1,27,977. The projected population for the intermediate and ultimate years are 1,53,571 and 1,81,399 in 2030 and 2045, respectively.
The sewage contribution is calculated as 115 LPCD with the sewage generated for intermediate and ultimate year are estimated as 17.66 MLD and 20.86 MLD.
The sewage is pumped from the pumping station to the treatment plant at Valampurivilai dump yard, where it will undergo treatment using Extended Aeration Sludge Process (EASP) technology. The treatment plant is designed to handle the intermediate stage capacity of 17.66 MLD.
The plant is constructed with the features such as receiving chambers, coarse silt screen, fine silt screen, distribution chamber, four aerators, two clarifiers, two chlorine contact tank, 10 sludge drying bed, treated effluent collection sump, pump rooms and a lab building.
An official from the department said, all the structures at the treatment plant have been completed and a high-tension power supply is available. Internal pumping works are carried out by the corporation at a fast pace and development of microorganisms in STP is underway and it will take about 20 days for them to become fully functional.
