Coimbatore’s ‘Road Safety Model City Project’ is an example to other cities in Tamil Nadu to achieve an accident-free environment, said Minister for Electricity, Prohibition, and Excise V. Senthil Balaji in Coimbatore city on Sunday.
Participating in the valedictory of a two-day hackathon, which was organised by the Coimbatore district administration, the Coimbatore City Police, and Uyir, a non-governmental organisation focused on road safety, at Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology, he said Tamil Nadu government would implement some of the ideas presented at the hackathon.
Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati commended the participants for the innovative and cost-effective solutions presented for accident prevention, and said select ideas from the hackathon would be incubated and implemented in Coimbatore.
City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar added that fatalities from road accidents surpassed those from conventional crimes and stressed the need for road safety measures to be implemented on a priority basis.
Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran noted that the hackathon not only focused on accident prevention, but also introduced ideas for post-accident response measures to reduce fatalities.

In the professional category, the team from NexTurn won the first prize along with a cash award of ₹1 lakh. The second prize was awarded to the team from DromoLys Research & Development Pvt. Ltd., while the team from Intel/Dassault Systèmes, Bengaluru, secured the third prize.
In the student category, the team from St. Joseph’s Institute of Technology, Chennai, won the first prize with a cash award of ₹1 lakh. The second prize went to the student team from Erode Sengunthar Engineering College, Perundurai, and the team from Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology, Pollachi, received the third prize.
