Vehicle movement on the Dhimbam ghat road was disrupted for a few hours on Friday after a milk-laden lorry fell on its side at the first hairpin bend. The accident led to hundreds of litres of milk spilling from the tank and flowing onto the road.
The ghat road, part of the Dindigul–Bengaluru National Highway (NH 948), has 27 hairpin bends and passes through the core area of the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR), connecting Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It also provides access to Talavadi.
The private lorry had collected milk from Talavadi and was en route to the Aavin plant in Chithode, Erode. While negotiating the turn, the driver lost control of the vehicle causing the accident. The driver escaped unhurt, but one of the tank’s hatches opened, following which milk started spilling onto the road. The spill was later stopped after the hatch was secured.
