A joint action committee of pro Opposition trade unions held a protest and burnt copies of the Union Budget 2025-26 for being “anti-people, anti-worker and anti-farmer” near the Swadeshi Mill on Thursday.
Workers from CITU, AITUC, INTUC, LPF, AICCTU, LLF, MLF and NDLF participated in the protest.
According to K. Sethu Selvam, AITUC general secretary, the protest had been called as none of the demands put forth during negotiations by trade unions with the Labour Ministry for schemes to protect the interests of workers found a mention in the Budget.
He alleged that the Union Government was actively pressuring State governments to implement labour laws that enslave the interests of the workers to corporates. The Budget only extends the Centre’s looting of the working class to benefit corporates while ignoring all the demands put forward by the central trade unions, he said.
G. Seenu Vasan, CITU secretary; P. Gnanasekaran, INTUC general secretary; VS Abhishekam and Dinesh Ponnaiah (AITUC), and leaders of various trade unions, addressed the workers.
