The Egmore police have arrested three constables of the Armed Reserve for assaulting a colleague on Thursday.
A senior official of the city police said Ranganathan, a constable in the Armed Reserve, wanted a transfer. So, he approached Sundarrajan, who also worked in a constabulary position, seeking a transfer. A deal was struck, and Ranganathan was told to pay ₹10,000 to transfer to a place of his choosing. Despite getting the transfer, Ranganathan only paid ₹5,000. The two of them argued over this.
On Tuesday night, when Ranganathan was consuming liquor with Sundarrajan and Anand and Mani Babu, also constables of the Armed Reserve, the trio assaulted the former. Ranganathan, whose leg was broken in the attack, was admitted to a government hospital. A departmental inquiry was held, and Sundarrajan, Anand, and Mani Babu were suspended. Based on a complaint from Ranganathan, the police registered a case and arrested the three men.
