The Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) of the police has arrested three youths hailing from Coimbatore on the charge of smuggling prescription drugs, including painkillers, to Coimbatore from Maharashtra.
The police seized over 2,000 tablets from the trio, who smuggled the contraband in a train.
Mohammed Thariq, 24, of Majid Colony at South Ukkadam, A. Sadiq, 25, of Mettur at Podanur and Sunfur Rahman, 23, of Pullukadu at South Ukkadam were arrested on Sunday.
PEW sleuths stationed themselves at Coimbatore railway station based on specific information that the trio was smuggling prescription drugs by a train in the early hours of Saturday. The policemen in mufti tailed them as they got out of the station. The trio was stopped on State Bank Road and their baggage was checked. The police seized 2,020 tablets of different prescription drugs from them.
According to the police, Thariq and Sadiq had been working in a fish stall. The three youths travelled to Maharashtra and procured the drugs from different pharmacies without producing prescriptions. The accused had planned to peddle tablets for higher margins in Coimbatore. They were arrested and sent to judicial remand.
