Thoothukudi Mayor Jegan Periyasamy urged the residents to avoid use of plastic, including polyethylene bags, which pose a significant challenge in solid waste management and to contribute in making the city cleaner.
Speaking at the Thoothukudi corporation’s north zone grievance redress meeting held on Wednesday, the Mayor said, that roads have been constructed across the city and daily supply of drinking water was being provided to most of the areas. Efforts were under way to ensure 24 hour water supply in some wards.
He mentioned that the corporation was collecting 180 tonnes of waste daily, with plastic waste being a major challenge to process. He noted that in January 2024, there were 427 locations in the city where waste was dumped improperly. Through awareness campaigns and the installation of signage, this number has reduced to below 120 locations and initiatives were underway to make these areas free from such practices in future. He also urged the people to cooperate with the municipal corporation to make the city cleaner.
Thoothukudi Corporation Commissioner L. Madhubalan and Deputy Mayor S. Jenitta were present at the meeting.
