In the wake of Hindu outfits planning to stage a protest in Thiruparankundram Hills in Madurai, where a controversy had erupted over the consumption of non-vegetarian food, the district administration has imposed prohibitory orders in the city as well as the district.

According to a press release issued on Monday (February 3, 2025), District Collector M.S. Sangeetha issued prohibitory orders under Section 163 of BNSS (Section 144 of CrPC) for two days: from 6 a.m. on February 3 to 12 a.m. on February 5.

Permissions for protests have been denied, taking into account the law and order-related issues and to maintain peace.

Earlier, the Madurai City police on February 2 denied permission to the Hindu Munnani, which had planned to stage a protest on February 4.

A Subramaniya Swamy temple as well as a Sikkandar Dargah are located in the hills, and recently, the Hindu groups had accused a group of people of conducting “animal sacrifice” and slammed IUML MP Nawas Kani for allegedly consuming non-vegetarian food in Thiruparankundram Hills.

With members of Hindu and Muslim groups making comments on the issue on social media, which is likely to cause disturbance to peace and maintenance of law and order, the prohibitory orders have been issued, the press release said.
