Telangana CM lays foundation stone for new Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad’s Goshamahal

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, along with Minister for Health C. Damodar Raja Narasimha, laid the foundation stone for the new Osmania General Hospital (OGH) in Goshamahal, Hyderabad, on Friday (January 31, 2025). Police threw a security dragnet in the area expecting trouble from local politicians. However, the event passed off peacefully.

The new hospital would be spread over a built-up area of 32 lakh square feet, adhering to the standards set by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS). With a capacity of 2,000 beds, it is designed to significantly expand medical services and improve healthcare infrastructure.

The hospital would feature 29 major and 12 minor operation theatres, equipped with advanced surgical infrastructure, including robotic surgery units and a dedicated transplant theatre. The design also integrates modern utilities such as a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), and a biomedical waste management system, a high-tech laundry and an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP).

Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar and others were present on the occasion.

Timeline:

2015: Then-Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao inspected the 110-year-old OGH building, calling it dilapidated and stating that it could not be sustained beyond four years despite renovations. He assured that a new building would be constructed soon.

2019: The Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association (HRDA) filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the construction of a multi-storeyed hospital complex, including the hospital, nursing college, and hostel

2020: The Telangana government ordered the closure of the old OGH building after it was inundated with rainwater and sewage

July 2023: The government submitted an affidavit to the Telangana High Court, declaring its decision to demolish the OGH building and construct a new facility

September 2023: A counter-affidavit was filed, strengthening the case for demolition and proposing a new 1,812-bed hospital complex

2023 Telangana Assembly Elections: The Congress party, in its manifesto, promised to preserve the historic OGH building

August 2024: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced in the State Assembly that the new OGH building would be constructed at Goshamahal

January 31, 2025: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha laid the foundation stone for the new OGH.
