Sub-Inspector of Police arrested on bribe charges in Madurai

Sub-Inspector of Police, N. Shanmuganathan of Jaihindpuram PS in Madurai City was arrested by Vigilance and Anti-Corruption sleuths after being caught red-handed while receiving ₹30,000, bribe money from a woman complainant to arrest an accused in an assault case, on Thursday.

According to DVAC sources, the complainant Kavitha had approached the investigating officer of an assault case registered by Jaihindpuram police.

She had been beaten up by four persons earlier this month following which the police had arrested two persons and two more were yet to be arrested.

Shanmuganathan had reportedly demanded ₹1 lakh from Kavitha for arresting the remaining two accused.

He then, after a bargain, had reduced it to ₹70,000. However, he insisted that she should pay ₹30,000 in advance to arrest them and the remaining after the arrest.

After she lodged a complaint with the DVAC Madurai unit, the sleuths, led by its Deputy Superintendent of Police, M. Sathyaseelan, laid a trap.

Shanmuganathan asked the woman to come to a junction in K. Pudur to hand over the money on the roadside.

Even as he received the money and kept it in the front pouch of his motorbike, the vigilance team, including Inspectors of Police, Kumaraguru, Ramesh Prabhu and Suryakala, caught and arrested him.
