The Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association (TNGEA) on Monday staged a 24-hour protest in front of the District Collectorate, urging Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to fulfil his election promises made to government employees.
The protest was led by TNGEA district president Mahendra Babu.
District secretary J. Uma Devi urged the government to abolish the New Pension Scheme (NPS) and reinstate the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), as promised by Mr. Stalin during his election campaign. She also insisted on payment of pending salary arrears for 21 months due to pay revision and to release the dearness allowance arrears.
The employees additionally sought regular salaries and statutory benefits for employees working under special consolidated pay and honorarium schemes such as noon meal workers, anganwadi staff and urban librarians. They also urged the government to assign the breakfast scheme duty to noon meal workers.
The employees further added that the association had planned a one-day mass casual leave protest on February 25. In case of the failure of the government’s response to the protests, there would be a strike on March 19. They also warned of an indefinite strike in future if their demands remained unmet.
