Senior Jail department officials have been booked on charge of giving special privileges to businessman Boby Chemmannur when he was lodged at the district jail, Kakkanad, last month.
The first information report (FIR) registered by the Infopark police arraigned as accused P. Ajaykumar, then Jail Deputy Inspector General, Jail Superintendent Raju Abraham, four identifiable men, and two women. Both the officials had since been suspended pending inquiry. They were booked under Section 86 (1) of the Kerala Prisons and Correctional Services (Management) Act, 2010.
The first accused, Mr. Ajaykumar, allegedly visited Mr. Chemmannur, who was arrested in a case registered for making objectionable remarks against a woman actor, along with rest of the accused at the office of Mr. Abraham on January 10. At the meeting, ₹200 was handed over to Mr. Chemmanur in violation of jail rules, the FIR said.
The group allegedly gained access to the jail to meet Mr. Chemmannur. Reportedly, there was no record of their visit in the prison’s entry register. The group allegedly facilitated the unlawful cash transaction on behalf of Mr. Chemmannur, backdating the payment to expedite the issuance of a telephone card. This, allegedly, was to avoid delay in securing the card, exposing the preferential treatment he received.
