Six workers, including four women, sustained injuries in a fire accident reported at Sathyaprabhu Fireworks unit near R. R. Nagar in Virudhunagar district on Wednesday afternoon.
Among them the condition of S. Simon Daniel (33) of Meenampatti is said to be critical with 100% burns. R. Veeralakshmi (35) of Athiveerampatti has suffered 35% burns, while P. Mahalakshmi has sustained 25% burn injuries.
The police have identified the other injured as K. Kasturi (33) of Athiveerampatti, N. Murugeswari (55) of Bommaiyapuram and J. Manickam (54) of Avudaiyapuram. The police said that Manickam has suffered fracture in his right hand.
While Veeralakshmi has been admitted to the Government Hospital in Sattur, Mahalakshmi has been admitted to Sivakasi GH. All the others have been admitted to the Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital.
The police said that workers were filling chemicals to make fireworks when friction while handling chemicals led to an explosion at around 2 p.m. All other workers who were working in different working sheds in the unit at Thathapatti fled the scene.
The police added that 12 working sheds were damaged in the fire which spread from one shed to another.
Firemen from Virudhunagar put out the flames. The unit is owned by S. Mohanraj (49).
Vachchakarapatti police are investigating.
