Senior citizen successfully treated for shoulder injury with biodegradable balloon

A senior citizen has been successfully treated for a severe shoulder injury at Rela Hospital with a balloon implantation.

The 65-year-old patient, Rajaprakasam, suffered a rotator cuff tear in his right shoulder after an electric shock. Before the balloon implantation, he had a minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to repair the tear. Although he tried conservative treatments, his condition continued to worsen, and surgery was necessary.

The InSpace Balloon, a biodegradable device, was placed between the shoulder blade and arm bone to reduce pain, improve movement, and strengthen the muscles around the injured area.

As per a press release from the hospital, the patient is expected to regain full mobility in three months. He will wear an arm sling for six weeks and follow a rehabilitation plan. Dr. Prakash Ayyadurai, the orthopaedic surgeon who performed both surgeries, said the InSpace Balloon is an effective option for older patients who cannot undergo major surgery.

Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO of Rela Hospital, highlighted the hospital’s focus on using advanced, minimally invasive treatments to improve patient care and quality of life.
