The retail fish market on the Ukkadam-Selvapuram bypass road has been demolished, and a new facility set up for the vendors at Pullukadu near Ukkadam.

Officials with police protection razed the structure using earthmovers on Wednesday.

The old market housed 72 fish vendors, all of whom have been moved to the new facility. However, 30 other vendors who used to trade fish on the periphery of the old market without designated stalls have not been allocated space in the new facility. A petition was filed with the Corporation requesting spaces to be allocated to them, and the civic body officials, in response, showed them two possible locations near the new market.

The vendors, however, have requested space either in the Corporation parking lot near the new fish market or near the Ukkadam flyover. In response, Corporation officials are now considering suitable alternatives for the 30 traders.
