The State Highways Department has taken up widening of 254.32 km of roads into four-lane ones in 2024-2025 under the Chief Minister Road Development Programme (CMRDP), Minister for Public Works, Highways, and Minor Ports E.V. Velu said on Friday.
The minister was speaking at a function held at Karattupalayam in Tiruchengode municipality, where he launched a project to expand a 9.15 km stretch of the Omalur-Sankari-Tiruchengode-Paramathi road at a cost of ₹59.15 crore under the CMRDP. Mr. Velu highlighted that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin introduced the CMRDP with the belief that road development would drive economic growth. Under this program, 253.62 km of roads were developed in 2021-2022, 157.10 km in 2022-2024, and 166.22 km are planned for widening works in 2023-2024.
The Minister added that 227 road works were taken up in Namakkal district over the last three years at a cost of ₹412 crore. In the current fiscal, the State Government sanctioned ₹154 crore for 57 road projects in the district.
Further, panchayat roads were developed at a cost of ₹67 crore since 2021. Work to lay a road at ₹30 crore for Nainamalai temple would begin soon. In Namakkal, bypass works worth ₹207 crore are progressing, the Minister added. Later, Mr. Velu inspected the Tiruchengode Bypass works and planted saplings in Tiruchengode.
