Restoration of canals to resume for flood mitigation in city

Work on restoration of important canals such as Mambalam Canal is set to start in the city. Chennai Corporation Council on Thursday passed resolutions to restore Mambalam Canal to improve flood mitigation in areas such as T.Nagar. The project is estimated at Rs.6.5 crore.. The work will begin in wards 113, 117 and 122 along the canal from Valluvar Kottam to the Adyar river. The previous project for restoration of Mambalam Canal was shelved several years ago owing to floods in areas such as T.Nagar.

GCC will also restore Nandanam Canal in ward 122 at an estimated cost of Rs.7.5 crore. Work on restoration of MGR Canal will be taken up in ward 138 from KK Salai to Muthumariamman Cross Street at an estimated cost of Rs.6.56 crore. In Jafferkhanpet Canal, GCC will demolish the retaining wall and reconstruct it in ward 139 from Appadurai Street tpo Erikkarai Street. The flood mitigation work is estimated at Rs.5.29 crore. GCC will also demolish the old drain from Kothari Nagar Second Main Road to Nandambakkam Canal in waed 155. The project is estimated at Rs.7.94 crore.

GCC will also restore Reddikuppam Canal in ward 169 in Adyar zone. Residents had complained to the Mayor about the overflow of water in the canal. Mayor R.Priya had inspected the location and ordered restoration of the canal for flood mitigation in the Adyar zone.

The civic body will also raise the height of the retaining wall of Veerangal Odai and implement chain link fencing in ward 186 and ward 188 from Kaiveli junction to Velachery IRR junction. The council also passed a resolution for construction of animal birth control centres in various parts of the city.

The council passed another resolution approving 36 projects under Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam of CMDA. The projects include expansion of Madhavaram bus terminus, construction of Vinayagapuram bus stand, development of an eco park in Canal Street in Tondiarpet zone, and flood mitigation work.
