Residents intercept vehicle dumping dye effluents into a canal in Erode

Tension prevailed near Chithode in Erode district on Saturday night after residents intercepted a vehicle allegedly dumping textile effluents into a canal maintained by the Public Works Department (PWD) in Mettukadai.

Gangapuram, near Chithode, is home to several textile processing units, and residents had previously raised concerns about effluent discharge into the canal. Early Sunday morning, they noticed a group allegedly disposing of effluents from four barrels into the water body. The residents seized the vehicle and staged a protest.

Upon receiving information, Chithode police reached the spot and initiated an inquiry.

The alleged discharge of textile effluents, particularly ahead of the release of water for the second irrigation cycle, has raised concerns among farmers and local residents.
