Residents of Nadarvalasai in Alagankulam panchayat protested for two days demanding closure of a Tasmac liquor outlet in their village.

The protesters, mostly women, said since the liquor outlet was opened was close to religious places and educational institutions, members of public were disturbed by the nuisance created by the tipplers.

While this problem persisted for several years, of late women found it difficult to put up with the misbehaviour of those consumed liquor in the Tasmac liquor outlet and were thus forced to protest “Inebriated men sometimes knock on the doors when women were alone and ask them for water or money,” said Riaz Khan, one of the protesters and a member of SDPI.

Women remained silent fearing adverse reaction from men, if they complained on the issue. As they could not put up with it anymore, they decided not to disperse until an action was taken regarding their grievance, he said.

The protesters dispersed only after District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon assured them that steps would be taken to close the Tasmac liquor outlet within four months.
