Social activist Medha Patkar has urged the government not to proceed with the proposed brewery and distillery at Elappully panchayat in Palakkad.
The people in the panchayat are opposing it as they fear that it will adversely affect their agriculture and the availability of water, she said at a lecture on ‘Politics of Nature’ organised by the Sabarmati Study and Research Centre of the Ernakulam District Congress Committee (DCC).
Ms. Patkar said that the natural resources in the country are being exploited for commercial interests. But nobody can fix a price on the bountiful nature, with its rich resources and ecology, she said.
She said that the focus should be on averting natural disasters rather than trying to provide compensation for the loss of lives after paving the ground for such tragedies. Ms. Patkar said that there should be concerted efforts to protect the Western Ghats.
Ms. Patkar also delivered the keynote address at the conference on ‘Ecological discourse: literary, scientific and sociological aspects’ organised by the Department of Hindi, Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, and Bharathiya Sahithya Prathishthan, Kochi.
