Premier research institutes to take part in science expo

A science exhibition will be organised by the Breakthrough Science Society in connection with its ‘All India Science Conference’ to be held at Tagore Theatre here from February 8 to 10. The expo, aimed at the public, will feature innovation, live demonstrations, and scientific models from premier research institutions such as the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Indian Space Research Organisation, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology.

Children from Different Art Centre at Magic Planet will also set up an exhibition, K. Kurien Issac, chairman of the welcome committee for the conference; P.N. Thankachan, Breakthrough Science Society Kerala chapter secretary; and Harikumar, Secretariat member of the Kerala chapter said at a press conference here on Thursday.

On February 8 and 9, the public will get an opportunity for skywatching at night. Ten telescopes will be available on the campus to observe planets, star clusters, and deep sky objects from 6 p.m. Solar observation to view sunspots will be held during the day.

Live science experiments to encourage the public to understand role of STEM in everyday life will be held.

A quiz will be held for students in Classes VIII to XII on February 8. A workshop for teachers will be held the next day. IIST registrar Kuruvila Joseph will inaugurate the workshop, to be led by ICT Academy of Kerala Knowledge Office head Riji N. Das and IIST faculty member Sarita Vig will lead the workshop. Vaisakhan Thampi, faculty member at M.G. College, will speak on ‘When science leaves the classroom: theory versus practice.’

On February 10, prominent scientists will deliver lectures for the public. SCTIMST biomedical technology wing head P.R. Harikrishna and Thiruvananthapuram IISER School of Chemistry faculty member Kana M. Sureshan will speak.

P. Balaram, former director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, will inaugurate the conference, at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday. Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre director S. Unnikrishnan Nair and Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology director Dipankar Banerjee will be present.

Nearly 1,000 delegates, including students, teachers, and researchers, from 20 States will take part in the conference. The delegate session will be held on February 9 and 10.
