Over 2,000 doctors from private hospitals take part in meeting to discuss MMR

Between April and December 2024, the State’s Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) dropped to 40.4 per one lakh live births from 45.5 during April 2023 to March 2024, according to Health Secretary Supriya Sahu.

In October 2024, Tamil Nadu, with an aim to bring down the MMR to less than 10 per one lakh live births in the next two years, constituted a State-level task force. Various strategies including pre-birth planning mechanisms were being taken.

The Health Secretary, in a post on social media, said that for the first time, 2,296 doctors from private hospitals in 38 districts along with government doctors came together to discuss strategies for reducing maternal mortality. She said that 57.3% deliveries in the State happened in government health facilities and 42.7% in private hospitals.

“Given the significant number of deliveries happening in the private sector, seamless coordination is the key to reduce mortality to a single digit as planned by the Government of Tamil Nadu,” she said.
