A 19-year-old nursing student ended her life in her hostel room in Harohalli, Ramanagara on Tuesday night.
The police have registered a case of abetment of suicide against members of the University’s management based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s father.
The deceased has been identified as Anamika Vineeth, a native of Kannur, Kerala, a first-year BSc nursing student at Dayananda Sagar University, Kanakapura, and was staying in the hostel on the same campus. Her roommate was away on sick leave for the last 15 days and the victim was staying alone in the room.
Security guards opened Anamakia’s room using the master key after no response came from Anamika’s room only to find her dead.
The police have recovered a death note written in Malayalam and have sent it to the Forensic Science Laboratory. Initial probe revealed that Anamika was under pressure due to academic reasons, which is also being probed, police said.
The victim’s classmates alleged that Anamika was being harassed by the University’s management. “She suffered harassment by faculty members and they also spread false information about her, resulting in severe mental and emotional abuse,” the students said, terming it “institutional harassment” and “academic torture”. Sources said that she was accused of malpractices.
The victim’s father, in his statement to the police, reportedly said that Anamika, during her visit home in Kannur a month ago, complained of harassment by the university administration due to which she was not able to focus on her studies. She reportedly called her parents on Tuesday afternoon and said she was unable to bear the harassment. The father told the police that he consoled her and assured he would come and meet the management.
