A huge posse of National Security Guard commandos in association with Tamil Nadu Police Commando Force conducted a counter-terrorism drill on ELCOT premises here on Thursday night.

Some 200 NSG commandos from New Delhi participated in the drill on tackling “terrorist attack” in a simulated situation wherein the terrorists had taken over the Information Technology Park by taking the people there as hostage.

“This is a regular exercise by the NSG to sharpen the coordination between the NSG and local police in such situations of terrorist attacks,” a senior officer said.

Simulated scenario

As per the simulated scenario, local police, including Tamil Nadu Police Commando Force entered the IT Park for an encounter to release the hostages by neutralising the terrorists.

In the meantime, the NSG commandos, from its nearest base, Chennai flew down to take over the rescue operation.

Even as the operation got over at IT Park, a similar attack was reported at Madurai Airport later in the night. The forced rushed there and took up the rescue operation.

“NSG is the nodal agency for training the commandos across the country. It also conducts similar counter terrorism drills at different parts of the country every year,” another officer said.

Such drills would increase the capacity building of the local police and improve the state of alertness.

NSG would impart its 40 years of experience in such counter terrorism attacks with its strategies and tactis and cuttin-edge technologies, he added.

Similar drill was conducted at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple three years ago, he added.
