National Road Safety Month activities in Coimbatore draw to a close with rally by 3,500 students

A total of 3,500 students from 24 colleges took part in a mass awareness rally at 12 locations in Coimbatore on January 30, 2025 (Thursday), marking the culmination of various activities that were organised by the non-governmental organisation ‘Uyir’, Coimbatore district administration and Coimbatore City Police, as part of observing the National Road Safety Month.

City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar flagged off the awareness drive at Race Course in the presence of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ashok Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic Planning) A. Sitrarasu, Uyir trustees D. Balasundaram and S. Chandrasekar, member S. Natarajan and senior police officers.

The rally was conducted at 12 different places in Coimbatore city simultaneously. A total of 3,500 Uyir Club volunteers representing 24 colleges took part in the campaign, along with their principals, professors, club mentors and police personnel.

A release from Uyir said that the key objective of the rally was to raise public awareness on the importance of road safety; emphasising compliance to wearing helmet and seat belt; adherence to speed limit; and the dangers of using mobile phone while driving.

The drive also highlighted the hazards of reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol, and importance of pedestrian safety.

On Friday, the last day of the National Road Safety Month, a drawing competition for students will be held at SSVM World School.
