Namakkal district came first in the state for consumer protection by raising awareness among consumers and taking action on complaints related to the public distribution system (PDS) for the year 2023-24.
District Collector S. Uma received the award and appreciation certificate from the Minister for Rural Development I. Periyasamy in the presence of Minister for Co-operation K.R. Periakaruppan and Minister for Food and Civil Supplies R. Sakkarapani at a function held at Dindigul district recently. Last year, 2022-23, Namakkal district got third place.
Officials attached to the cooperative department said that 83 consumer forums were created in schools and colleges across the district in 2023 and awareness was created among students on consumer protection. Similarly, through the public relations camps conducted by the District Collector in the villages, awareness was created among the villagers where to lodge complaints in connection with the complaints on PDS.
Of the grievances received during consumer grievance meetings in 2022-23, 96% of the complaints were addressed and in 2023-24 all the complaints received during the meetings were addressed. Similarly, 100% of complaints received on PDS-related issues were also addressed in 2023-24. Likewise, complaints in connection with ration cards were all addressed. In the year 2022-23, in Namakkal district, rice, kerosene, dal, and palmolein oil to the tune of 1,57,178 kg were seized from offenders, and in 2023-24, a total of 77,271 kg of these items were seized, the officials added.
“In 2023-24, a digital board regarding consumer protection and awareness was set up at Namakkal Collectorate to generate awareness. Likewise, complaints received during the LPG consumers’ grievance meeting were sorted out in 2023-24 and petitions received through the consumer service centres were also sorted out. Drawing competitions regarding consumer awareness were held in schools. It is based on these activities, that the district got first place in the state,” officials added.
