Two suspects, who were at large in connection with the Mukkom gang rape attempt case, surrendered before the Thamarassery Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-II on Thursday. The suspects – Suresh Babu, 46, and Riyas, 47– were employees at a hotel, where the alleged rape attempt took place against a 24-year-old woman on February 2.
Devadasan, 64, the hotel owner and the prime accused in the incident, had already been arrested and remanded in judicial custody. The police would soon seek the custody of the three for further investigation.
The woman who reportedly jumped from the top floor of a building to escape from the alleged sexual assault had sustained grave injuries. She was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode. According to hospital sources, she remains in the intensive care unit with multiple fractures.
Details of the alleged rape attempt came to light after the woman, a hotel receptionist, shared videos of the attackers with the police and her family. Her family who were reportedly aware of the previous misconduct by the three suspects also gave statements to the police.
The Kerala State Women’s Commission sought a report from the police following public allegations of laxity in tracking the attackers. The Kerala State Youth Commission also intervened to ensure quality medical care for the survivor.
