Most of the residents who have received notice from election officials about multiple entries on electoral rolls in the Assembly constituencies of Chennai have not replied to the notices informing them that their name has been registered in more than one location.
Many residents have complained that they have received notices even though their names were not registered in multiple locations. Velachery resident V.Kamakshi said she received notice about multiple entries showing details of several other electors in other districts. “I have explained to officials that I have not registered in other areas. I have informed them that the information generated by the system was wrong,” she said.
Villivakkam resident Ashok Kumar said he received notice from election officials even though he had not registered his name in other areas. Anna Nagar councillor T.V.Shemmmozhi said many residents who have received notices were confused about what to do and have started visiting councillors’ offices to clarify doubts. Owing to the confusion, only around 2% of the residents who received notices have replied to the notices received in Assembly constituencies of Chennai.
Of the 2,88,603 residents who have been identified with multiple entries on electoral rolls in Chennai, 1,22,318 notices have been undelivered and returned to the ERO’s offices in the 16 Assembly constituencies of Chennai. Over 42% of the notices sent to residents in the city have been returned to the electoral registration officers in the 16 Assembly constituencies of Chennai as the postal department has mentioned that the persons were not found at the address.
“We will send booth-level officers to the addresses for verification before deleting the names of the electors from the rolls following a standard operating procedure,” said an official. The system has generated the list of multiple entries by screening the name, father’s name, age, gender and address. A period of 15 days starting from the date of issue of notice has been provided for the electors to furnish a reply to the notice, said an official.
