Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI), the defence metallurgical and engineering public sector unit, is working on the development of advanced materials for hypersonic applications and next-generation jet engines, to revolutionize aerospace performance in the coming years.
The company is also developing advanced superalloys for jet engines and specialized corrosion-resistant coatings for aerospace structures. With increasing demand for cutting-edge materials in both military and civilian aerospace applications, it will be unveiling its latest advancements in high-performance materials and aerospace technologies plus showcase plans for the future of aerospace at the ‘Aero India 2025’ to begin in Bengaluru on Monday.
MIDHANI has been a key player in supplying advanced materials critical for aerospace applications, including high-strength titanium alloys, nickel-based superalloys, and special steels. These materials are vital for components in aircraft engines, satellite systems and space vehicles because of their performance under extreme conditions, said Director (Finance) N. Gowri Sankara Rao, also holding addl. charge of Chairman & Managing Director.
In a press release on Sunday, Mr. Rao pointed out that MIDHANI’s materials are used in iconic projects, including the ‘Tejas’ fighter jet and space exploration missions. Aerospace portfolio includes components like turbine blades, engine casings and structural elements for military aircraft, rockets, and defence systems.
Recent new products have been development of alloys such as ‘Titanium Aluminide’, which offers superior high-temperature strength and lightweight properties. This material is ideally suited for aerospace applications, where weight reduction and performance in extreme conditions are paramount.
The official said that at the aero show, the company will engage with international Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), defence contractors and aerospace innovators to forge new partnerships to strengthen its role in global aerospace supply chains. It has already partnered with Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and international aerospace companies.
As part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, MIDHANI’s R&D efforts are focused on creating lightweight, high-strength materials that offer improved performance while reducing overall weight, helping to improve fuel efficiency and operational effectiveness in aerospace applications, the release added.
