Man robbed at knifepoint after 30-minute chat on dating app

The Mir Chowk police arrested a gang of five men for allegedly luring a man through a dating app and robbing him of ₹40,000 at knife-point.

He was engaged in chatting for about half-an-hour before he was asked to meet them, said the police.

Inspector of Mir Chowk police, Rachakonda Ravinder, said that on January 19, the victim, a resident of Dabeerpura, arranged to meet someone via a dating app.

“Upon arriving at the agreed location in Gurvana Galli, Charminar, he was confronted by five individuals, Syed Fahad Ali, 22, Mohd Tauheed Uddin, also aged 22, Syed Roumaan Ullah Hussaini, 21, Mohd Abdul Raouf, 22 and Mohd Shoaib Khan, 20, who forcibly made him withdraw cash from an ATM at knife-point,” said the police.

The gang chatted with him for half-an-hour before asking him to meet. Tauheed’s phone was used by Rauman, while Fahad Ali planned the scam, with Raouf withdrawing the money. Shoiab Khan was holding the knife. “They held him at knife-point at the ATM and fled the spot by warning him,” said the officer.

Following a complaint against them on February 1, the Mirchowk police nabbed and recovered ₹18,500 from them.
