A 55-year-old man was held at the old bus terminus in Vandavasi town in Tiruvannamalai on Saturday for collecting money from passengers, posing as a bus ticket examiner.
The arrested person was identified as S. Elangovan, a native of Arani town.
According to the police, Elangovan was working as a contract staff at a bus depot in Chengalpattu before he settled in Red Hills near Chennai. Since then, he has been working as a matrimony broker and made additional money by cheating bus crew.
He bought a transport officer uniform from Chenai’s Moore Market a few months ago. Since then, he has been travelling to the bus terminuses of big towns, where posing as a bus ticket examiner, he imposed fines on bus crew citing overspeed and other traffic rule violations.
His deception came to light on Saturday when a bus crew member at the old bus terminus in Vandavasi got suspicious of his claims and informed senior transport officials.
A team of officials led by ticket examiner V. Kannapiran went to the terminus. They verified the identity card of Elangovan and found that it was fake.
Based on a complaint by Kannapiran, the Vandavasi police arrested Elangovan. They also seized fake bus tickets, time charts and cash from him.
He was later lodged at sub-jail in Vandavasi town.
