Karnataka unit of the Indian Coast Guard displayed its prowess before Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot during a ‘day at sea’ event organised by it in Mangaluru on Sunday, February 2.
The event was held about 20 km inside the Arabian sea off New Mangalore Port, Panambur on the occasion of 49th Raising Day of the Coast Guard.
The Governor aboard the Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Varaha’ witnessed the operational capabilities of the coast guard. U.T. Khader, Speaker, Legislative Assembly visited ‘Varaha’ for sometime before it embarked on its journey for demonstration inside the sea.
P.K. Mishra, Deputy Inspector General and Commander of the Karnataka unit of the coast guard greeted the Governor and the Speaker aboard the ship.
The Governor was given a ceremonial guard of honour aboard the ship before he witnessed an array of operational demonstrations which included search and rescue operation by a helicopter and life boat, firefighting, small arms firing, ship manoeuvers and live demonstration of life raft inflation.

In addition to ICGS Varaha, two Offshore Patrol Vessels, three Fast Patrol Vessels, two interceptor boats participated in the operational drills.
The Governor interacted with Coast Guard personnel, lauding their determination and dedication in safeguarding India’s maritime frontiers.
The Coast Guard Commandant K.V. Bonymon told the visiting press persons that the coast guard uses its helicopters in search and rescue operations whenever sea is rough. Helicopters are also used in emergency medical evacuation. Life raft is also used in rescue operations to rescue people who are in distress at sea.
The Indian Coast Guard observed its 49th Raising Day on February 1, Saturday.
