Home Minister V. Anitha meeting a hospitalised gas leak victim, in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

Home Minister V. Anitha on Wednesday visited Care Hospital to check on the condition of workers injured in a gas leak that occurred at a pharmaceutical plant owned by Hetero Pharma at Nakkapalli in Anakapalli district on February 4. Twelve workers were injured in the incident.

The Home Minister directed officials to ensure the best treatment for the patients.

Speaking to reporters on the occasion, she said that a high-level committee was constituted to keep a close watch on industries and their compliance with safety regulations.

She said that as the election for the MLC (Teachers’ constituency) seat was scheduled on February 27, the model code of conduct was in force. So, she postponed the review meeting on the safety preparedness of the industries. She said that she will chair the meeting after the elections.

The workers at Hetero Pharma fell ill after inhaling pungent toxic gas (sodium hypochloride) that leaked from the plant on Tuesday night. They had difficulty breathing and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for primary treatment. Later, three of them were shifted to Care Hospital in Visakhapatnam for better treatment, where the Home Minister visited them on Wednesday.
