Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre said on Friday (January 31, 2025) that the State Cabinet’s decision to declare the Hessarghatta Grasslands a conservation reserve will not create any difficulties for the residents. He added that the new designation would help prevent encroachment and illegal poaching of birds and animals.
Rich biodivesity
“This declaration will protect the natural grasslands, which are vital for the survival of birds and insects. The grasslands is home to 133 species of birds, 40 native plant species, and wildlife such as leopards, jackals, and wild cats,” he added. He said the Hessaraghatta Lake, along with Byatha Lake, are also important breeding grounds for migratory birds.
Water source
“Hessaraghatta Lake has historically been a traditional water source for Bengaluru and will continue to be a key reservoir in the future as well,” he said.
The decision to designate this land as a conservation reserve was initially approved on October 7, 2024, during the meeting of the State Wildlife Board, chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. On January 30, the State Cabinet approved the declaration of the Greater Hessarghatta Grasslands Conservation Reserve.
