A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Friday exempted CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan from personally appearing before the court on February 10 in a contempt court case initiated for allegedly blocking a public road at Vanchiyoor in Thiruvananthapuram by putting up a stage on the road for holding a local party meeting.
The Bench of Justices Anil K. Narendran and Muralee Krishna S. dispensed with his personal appearance on condition that he shall personally present in the court on February 12 at 4 p.m.
In an affidavit seeking exemption from personal appearance on February 10, Mr. Govindan submitted that the Thrissur CPI(M) district conference was scheduled for February 9, 10, and 11. It was absolutely essential for him to participate in the conference as he was the State secretary. As the State conference was scheduled much earlier and any change of date would affect the entire process of different conferences.
The Bench had directed the CPI(M) leader and others to appear on February 10 when a petition filed by N. Prakash seeking to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Mr. Govindan and others came up for hearing.
