The Kerala High Court on Thursday (February 6) permitted fireworks displays in connection with the annual festival of the Ernakulam Siva Temple on February 8 and 10.
Justice T.R. Ravi passed the order on a writ petition filed by the officer of the Ernakulathappan Devaswom. The District Collector had earlier rejected the devaswom officer’s request for fireworks displays.
The court ordered the authorities, including the Revenue department, Fire Safety department, and police, to ensure that the fireworks are carried out only with the help of a portable magazine brought in at the time of the display, as no magazine or storeroom is maintained.
It also directed the authorities to ensure that the fireworks are conducted smoothly, in accordance with the licence, and using only the items permitted in this order.
The court ordered that the officers of the Fire Safety department should identify the places where the barricades are to be placed to maintain the distance between the spectators and the area where the display is to be conducted. The petitioner must ensure that barricades are placed at these locations. It should be ensured that no person is permitted to enter into the prohibited area, except those who are conducting the fireworks display.
