A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Thursday admitted an appeal filed by Greeshma, alias Sreekutty, and her uncle Nirmala Kumaran Nair, challenging the order of the Additional Sessions Court, Neyyattinkara, convicting and awarding them sentence in the Sharon Raj murder case.
The sessions court had awarded capital punishment to Greeshma and a sentence of three years imprisonment to her uncle for murdering her boyfriend, 23-year-old Sharon Raj of Thiruvananthapuram, by giving a drink laced with poison. Sharon died in 2022 .
The Bench also suspended the sentence awarded to her uncle on condition that he shall execute a bond for ₹50,000 with two solvent sureties.
‘Not rarest of rare’
In her appeal, Greeshma said that the entire case had been sensationalised. Therefore, the court was under pressure to find her guilty and sentence her to death. The sessions court “without any scientific evidence” came to the conclusion that Sharon died of poisoning. In fact, the case cannot be considered as ‘rarest of rare’. Besides, no mitigation study was done before awarding the death penalty.
