GRP begins awareness programme on women safety at Virudhunagar railway station

Government Raily Police personnel distribute pamphlets to passengers at Virudhunagar Railway station on Sunday.

The Government Railway Police have begun an awareness programme on women safety in trains among the passengers at Virudhunagar railway station.

Led by the GRP Virudhunagar station Inspector of Police, T. Selvi, the police personnel were distributing pamphlets containing the emergency helpline to seek help from police and other agencies during travel.

“We tell them that the women passengers, if they feel threatened by someone or by someone’s presence, they should immediately call 1512, the GRP helpline number or 139 the railway helpline number. Besides, they can also download the Kaaval Uthavi mobile App to send SOS to the Tamil Nadu Police control room seeking immediate assistance,” Ms. Selvi said.

The SOS would also come handy for women staying lone, or when they make journey alone in taxis or when they return home late in the night.

She said that the police would keep a watch on the ladies’ coaches of all trains when they stop at the railway stations.

However, there are chances that some antisocials could jump into the ladies’ compartment when the trains slowly chuggs out of the station.

“We tell the women passengers that the ladies coaches are meant only for ladies and children. The doors of the coaches could be locked once the train starts to move to prevent entry of unauthorised persons,” she said.

The pamphlets were distributed in all coaches and awareness talks were given to all passengers who come to the station.

This initiative has been made by Director General of Police (Railways), K. Vanniaperumal, following an assault on a pregnant woman passenger in a ladies’ compartment of a running train in Katpadi recently.
