A total of 24,963 tonnes of construction waste were removed between January 7 and February 6 in areas under the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), a press release said. This included 13,142 tonnes from zones 1 to 8 and 11,820 tonnes from zones 9 to 15. The waste was transported to the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dump yards, where recycling measures were initiated, the release said. The operation used 101 vehicles, including tipper lorries, mini lorries, earth movers, and bobcats.

“The GCC removes up to 1 tonne of construction waste free of charge. Fees and guidelines are in place for those generating between 1 and 20 tonnes of construction waste, as well as for larger quantities. Illegal dumping of construction waste in public spaces carries a fine of ₹5,000 and involves police action. In January, fines to the tune of ₹8,06,000 in total were imposed, and a few vehicles were seized. Residents can report construction waste for removal by contacting the 1913 helpline,” the civic body said in the release.
