Chennai Corporation Council on Thursday passed resolutions to hand over open space reserve (OSR) lands for metro rail construction in various zones of the city. Usually, OSR lands are not used for construction activity in the city as the land parcels are set aside for conservation of greenery and development is not permitted. The OSR lands play a key role in disaster response.
The GCC council passed the resolutions following the approval given for the list of lands required for CMRL at the high power committee meeting for the important infrastructure project. The GCC council however imposed conditions on metrorail to implement the project without causing disturbance to the residents, remove construction debris from the site immediately and frequently restore potholes on roads near the project site.
Following the resolution, CMRL will get a 172 sq m area in an OSR land on R.K.Mutt Road in Mylapore in ward 126. Another 59 sq m of land on R.K.Salai classified as corporation private has also been handed over to CMRL for creation of a pedestrian walkway in ward 124.
In Saligramam, a piece of OSR land measuring 48 sq metre in ward 132 on Arcot Road has also been handed over to CMRL. Metrorail work will also be taken up in ward 132 in Puliyur in another parcel of OSR land measuring 27 sq metre on Arcot Road.
In ward 149 in Valasaravakkam, an OSR land parcel measuring 37 sq metre in a Chennai Corporation park on Arcot Road will also be utilised for the project.
An OSR land measuring 76 sq metre in Maduravoyal in ward 152 will also be utilised for the metrorail project. GCC has also handed over an OSR land measuring 162 sq metre in Alandur on Mount Poonamallee Road along the Adyar River. In Sholinganallur zone in ward 195, GCC has handed over 3390 sq metre of land in Okkiyam Thoraipakkam, along Rajiv Gandhi Salai for metrorail construction. The OSR land measuring 1593 sq metre in ward 198 in Sholinganallur has also been handed over for the project. Another vacant land of GCC measuring 331 sq metre on Rajiv Gandhi Salai has also been handed over for metrorail.
