The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has opened online booking for a guided heritage walk on the premises of Ripon Buildings, near Central Square, for tourists and residents.

The civic body on Thursday invited residents to book their slots here.

GCC Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran said the civic body had decided to launch the online booking option for the heritage walk this week.

“Starting Saturday, 150 persons will be permitted to visit Ripon Buildings on specific days of the week. The heritage walk will cover the Victoria Public Hall after its renovation is completed. They will also be allowed inside the Council Hall. Historians have been asked to register as guides for the walk. Three have registered so far. More are expected to be roped in,” an official said.

The GCC has been permitting heritage walks on the Ripon Buildings premises these past few months based on requests from organisations. The online booking mode is expected to provide individual residents and tourists an opportunity to visit the heritage building. Residents who intend to book slots for the walks will be asked to provide details including Aadhaar, mobile number, and home address.

“The heritage walks will be conducted on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Visitors will learn about the history, architecture, and heritage of the Ripon Buildings. Individuals, families, schools, colleges, and organisations will be permitted to participate in the walks,” another official said.

The renovation of the Ripon Buildings started during the tenure of former Chief Minister Karunanidhi using funds from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. However, the work on the restoration of the Victoria Public Hall has been delayed.
