Four persons arrested for harassing women on ECR

The Kanathur police have arrested four individuals and launched a search for three more suspects for harassing a group of women traveling in a car on East Coast Road in the early hours of January 25.

According to police reports, a woman from Kanathur filed a complaint on January 26, alleged that around 3 a.m. the previous day, she and four of her friends were traveling near Muttukadu Bridge when their car was pursued by two vehicles with seven to eight men. One of the vehicles displayed a ruling party flag. The men followed the complainant’s car to her residence, alleging that she had hit their vehicle.

The suspects argued with the woman regarding the accident. The complainant, however, denied any involvement. The footage of the incident subsequently went viral, prompting the Kanathur police to register a case and initiate an investigation.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Pallikaranai Karthikeyan confirmed the arrest of four suspects — Santhosh, 28, Tamilkumaran, 21, Ashwin, and Visves, 21. Two sports utility vehicles were also seized. The police have identified three more suspects and are searching for them. Most of the accused are college students, officials said.

Mr. Karthikeyan added that investigations revealed that the suspects had no political affiliations. The ruling party flag on their vehicle was allegedly used to evade police scrutiny and toll fees.
