The layer of fog or mist may prevail over isolated pockets of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, this week.
Officials of the Regional Meteorological Centre said fog was likely to envelope the city on February 8.
Lack of northerly component in the wind, low wind speed and high humidity would influence fog formation, they said. Though fog covered Chennai on Wednesday, visibility was betterby 7.30 a.m. — at 1,300 metres— compared to Tuesday.
Poor visibility
Director in-charge of Aerodrome Meteorological Office V.R. Durai said the visibility had dropped to 150 metres for an hour till 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Clear sky and increased moisture in atmosphere had led to the thick blanket of fog, he said.
The delayed withdrawal of Northeast monsoon and the recent weather system that brought rainfall to some parts of the State had increased the atmospheric moisture. “We are expecting a similar weather trend of low visibility below 800 metres on February 8. There are chances for clear sky, moisture incursion and change in wind direction that may trigger fog formation,” he said. Officials said that the blanket of fog that had persisted on February 18 last year had reduced visibility to 800 metres.
Meanwhile, the State may experience warmer days till the weekend.
The RMC, Chennai, has forecast that maximum temperature may rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal in some pockets of the State. P. Senthamarai Kannan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Chennai, said dry weather and clear sky for a few days would influence an increase in day temperature.
On Wednesday, Erode recorded 34.6 degrees Celsius, which was the highest temperature recorded in the State. Chennai experienced a warm day with Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recording 33 degrees Celsius and 33.6 degrees Celsius respectively.
