The Tamil Nadu Part-time Teachers’ Federation (TNPTF) has urged the authorities to regularise the jobs of over 12,000 part-time teachers who are employed in 7,000 government schools across the State.
According to the federation, approximately 500 part-time teachers work in government schools in Tiruchi.
In a press release, the federation said that there had been no improvement in the faculty members’ emoluments despite their years of service.
“The part-time teachers work on an 11-month contract, with no benefits such as insurance or provident fund, besides stepping in for extra duties throughout the academic year. We appeal to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to regularise our terms on a par with regular staff appointees as he had promised in the DMK’s election manifesto,” TNPTF secretary S. Senthilkumar, said.
Part-time teachers were appointed in 2016 to teach subjects such as Physical Education, Art, Tailoring, Horticulture, Computer Science and Life Sciences in government schools, to expose students to co-curricular activities.
The part-time teachers were initially paid a monthly salary of ₹10,000. An additional ₹2,500 was sanctioned last year by the School Education Secretary after widespread protests over the issue.
“We are being paid these amounts separately at different times of the month, instead of as a consolidated salary, which increases our financial burden,” said the release.
